Grass Fed Vs. Grain Fed
Grass fed whey is simply whey that is made from cow’s milk that were allowed to graze on natural grass pastures year round. These cows are never contained to a feed lot and are never fed corn or other grains. Cows were never meant to eat corn and it is not a good or sustainable food for them to eat. Grain-fed cows have higher cholesterol (and it is the bad cholesterol), they have higher fat percentage, they are less healthy, are more prone to disease, and contain far fewer healthy omega 3 fatty acids.
However, natural grass fed cows are another story…a much healthier one.
So what makes grass fed whey protein so far superior? Well first and foremost it is because it is all natural. Since cows were meant to eat grass and get exercise by being allowed to roam free in non-chemically treated pastures, these grass fed cows maintain a much healthier biological makeup. This results in much healthier meat and dairy.
The Benefits of Grass Fed Cow’s Meat and Dairy
If you have every heard that eating too much red meat is bad for you it is simply because of the way cows are fed and treated in feedlots. Grain-fed cows that are kept in feed lots are so unhealthy that they are usually on the brink of death when they are slaughtered.
The same goes for the milk produced by these cows. Grass fed cows milk is absolutely packed full of healthy and nutrient rich enzymes that are excellent to drink. And the whey protein that is produced from grass fed cows milk is exponentially better for you as well.
Think for a second what would happen if you were taking a supplement from an animal that is eating pesticides. Well those pesticides get into the blood stream of the cow and the digestive tract which eventually makes its way into the protein powder. That is something you want to avoid and likewise you want to avoid any whey that comes from cows injected with hormones. That is another extremely important problem to avoid.
Finding a whey protein that comes from grass fed cows that are disease-free, pesticide-free, chemical-free, hormone treatment-free and GMO-free is unfortunately quite difficult to find. The problem is that grass feeding cows is much more expensive than simply giving them cheap subsidized corn. It is sad that greed has gotten in the way of health.
However, grass fed whey protein is a relatively new up and comer to the market of protein supplements and we believe that it will only become more and more popular as people become aware of the benefits of grass fed products.
Similarly to how a cage free chicken will produce a superior egg…grass fed cows simply produce better beef and dairy.
At the turn of the 20th century cholesterol levels and instances of heart disease were extremely low in the United States. However it has now become one of the leading causes of death. So what has changed? The biggest thing is that we eat so many processed foods and America eats a lot of beef…and most of that beef is grain fed.
Studies have shown that every single cell and every system in our body will function better and more optimal when we eat products from animals raised on grass. This is because grass-fed beef is shown to be naturally leaner than grain-fed beef.
When you hear the term Omega 3 fatty acids you probably think of fish and salmon in particular because they are known to be very high in these healthy nutrients. Omega 3 fatty acids help your brain functionality, reduce inflammation, and help lower your risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.
Well researchers have shown that there is a drastic increase in Omega-3’s when you compare grass fed cows to grain fed cows. Omega-3’s in cows that feed on grass is 7% of the total fat content, compared to 1% in grain-only fed beef. So now you can begin to see why it is superior in nutritional benefits.
Grass fed cows have 700% more Omega 3 fatty acids than grain fed beef.
Also, Grass-fed beef has the perfect recommended ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fats (3:1.) whereas when cows are fed grains it disrupts this perfect ratio.
Also, grass-fed beef is packed with many other natural vitamins and minerals, plus it is an incredible source of CLA (or conjugated linoleic acid) a fatty acid that helps reduce the risk of cancer, obesity, diabetes, and a number of immune disorders. It is also a vital component in helping your body to lose weight and build lean muscle mass.
The Grass fed whey protein advantage
Grass fed whey protein also contains a much higher instance of vitamins and antioxidants. The vitamins A and E are especially present and help to boost the immune system and fight off many diseases. Grass fed whey also contains the incredible antioxidant Glutathione which is often referred to as the human body’s “master antioxidant”.
Whey protein is one of the planet’s best protein forms to add to your diet. If you are taking any whey protein you are far better off than taking soy protein or any other protein supplements. However, if you want to maximize the potential of your protein and squeeze every benefit and ounce of goodness out of your whey then you should absolutely choose grass fed whey protein powder. And to make sure that all of the nutritional benefit and enzymes in the grass fed whey stay intact you must also make sure that it is “undenatured” which means that it has been processed using very low heat.
So by now you should be able to see why the emergence of something like grass fed whey protein powder is so crucial and beneficial to your daily diet and why you should look for this above all the other whey proteins out there on the market.
